Mobile sports betting has continued to grow in popularity throughout the USA. Many sportsbooks understand this, and so, have developed state-of-the-art sports betting apps. And now, people in Maryland get to enjoy this exciting way of interacting with their favorite sporting events.
Maryland’s recent mobile sports betting launch may see it outperforming states such as Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Many are keeping an eye on the state, especially in the first quarter of 2023. This is when significant sporting events will take place.
There were 16.5 million betting transactions from Maryland’s seven mobile sportsbooks in its first week of operation in late November 2022. This is nearly double the number of transactions in Virginia over the same Thanksgiving weekend period.
Expected revenue from mobile betting
There’s been strong growth in mobile sports betting revenue in Maryland. This shows that both bettors and sportsbooks are eager for more options. According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), sports betting in the US reached $15.99 billion in Q3 2022. This is a 40.9% increase from the same period in 2021.
The growth’s driven by the expansion of legal sports betting to several new markets. Additionally, there’s the success of mobile sports betting in New York since becoming legal in 2019. In Maryland, specifically, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced a total of $186.1 million in wagers placed in November 2022.
It’s expected that the mobile sports betting handle will continue to grow throughout the 2022-23 NFL season. There’s the expectation that more sportsbooks and fans will come online during this time. Currently, seven sportsbooks are live in Maryland, with three more (Fanatics, betParx, and Betfred) set to launch soon.
It is also likely that more Maryland sportsbooks will be online in time for the Super Bowl on Feb 12, 2023. According to John Martin, Director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming, all the mobile sports betting sites that applied for Maryland licenses, will launch in 2023.
This will bring the total number of mobile entries in the state to 21 and the total number of facility licenses to between 15 and 20. This increase in sports betting options in the mid-Atlantic region is expected to contribute to further revenue growth.
