Did anyone really think Tottenham Hotspur could get any more ‘Spursy’ this summer?
Indeed, when the club sacked Jose Mourinho prior to their English League Cup Final against Manchester City, many would have rightly have predicted that any small hope that they had of obtaining a trophy for the first time since Juande Ramos won it for them back in 2008 would have been eviscerated.
Of course, Ryan Mason was placed in temporary charge to lead the team to the end of the Premier League season – as they appeared to follow an approach that Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have all looked to adopt recently in hiring a former player who would know the club inside out – and it worked out in the fact that they managed to secure a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
However, with the Premier League season having finished a month or so ago, the club still do not have a permanent manager in place and have since appeared to find it rather hard to find someone who is willing to come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Oh, and when they appear to have found someone, that deal just appears to collapse right in front of them. They might have better luck playing the games available at www.gameseek.co.uk if they want to have something enjoyable to experience.
Names like Erik ten Hag, Julian Naglesmann and former boss, Mauricio Pochettino have all been thrown about at one stage, although none of those ever really looked likely as Hag signed a new deal at Ajax, Naglesmann joined Bayern Munich and Pochettino is at PSG.
Antonio Conte was on the shortlist and looked set to make a return to London after deciding to leave Inter Milan after winning the Serie A title, but an agreement did not appear to be anywhere near being concluded.
Spurs then looked to go rather ‘Spursy’ on everyone by chasing Paulo Fonseca recently as the man to essentially replace Jose Mourinho – that is the guy who has replaced Fonseca at AS Roma, by the way.
However, in typical fashion, that move collapsed due to Daniel Levy seemingly not wanting to put his hand in his pocket any deeper due to tax laws and the fact that the Portuguese boss wanted to be compensated for paying them when he did not have to in Italy.
Gennaro Gattuso was the latest man in this ridiculous managerial goose chase, but a backlash from the fans via means of a protest, which meant any move was hastily shelved.
Jurgen Klinsmann has since thrown his hat into the ring as a potential boss, having claimed he called Levy after the Mourinho sacking two months ago about potentially returning to the club for a third spell.
Could things get any more ‘Spursy’ if Tottenham Hotspur tried this summer? Probably.
