The best xG performers in this Premier League season so far

The Premier League 2020/21 season is up and running and it is fair to say the first match weeks have been crazy. Chelsea conceded three against West Brom, Manchester City conceded five against Leicester, Leicester conceded three against West Ham, Manchester United conceded six against Spurs and, finally, defending champions Liverpool conceded SEVEN against Aston Villa. To add to this, there have been no 0-0 scorelines so far in 38 matches. So, all in all, the Premier League season so far, has been goals, goals and goals only.

One player who has stood out in that aspect is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 23-year-old English international has already found the back of the net six times this season, joint top with Son Heung-Min. Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy are joint second with five goals each, however, Vardy has scored four penalties and Salah has scored two penalties.

The following visualisation shows the best xG performers (top 25) from this season so far.

The biggest xG difference being Son Hueng-Min with a differential of +4.62 and on the other side, Che Adams, who is yet to score a goal, has a negative xG difference of -2.57. Jamie Vardy has an xG value of four, and is the highest among the top 25 xG performers.

Newcastle’s summer signing Callum Wilson, who has scored four goals for this season, has an xG difference of +0.13 and is in with his xG value of 3.87. Ollie Watkins, who scored a hattrick against Liverpool, is among the top 10 for xG with an xG value of 2.55.
