Nestory Irankunda Scout Report At Watford 20252026

Watford have completed the signing of 19-year-old Australian winger Nestory Irankunda from German giants Bayern Munich.

The move was concluded for a final fee of €3m, with a buy-back clause and a 50% sell-on fee.

The initial figure from Watford and the buy-back clause from FC Bayern signal how highly the forward is rated by both clubs, and suggest promise for Hornets fans ahead of the 2025/2026 EFL Championship season.

So, is this dynamic winger a player that will thrive in the EFL, or is there more than initially meets the eye?

In this in-depth player analysis and scout report, we analyse Nestory Irankunda’s strengths, identify areas for improvement, and examine his potential impact at Watford, as the team looks to improve upon last season’s disappointment and finally make a genuine push to regain its Premier League status.

Who Is Nestory Irankunda?

Nestory Irankunda is a natural right-winger, capable of playing across the front three.

He stands at 5’8″ and weighs roughly 74kg.

Irankunda burst onto the scene at an extremely young age, making his debut for Adelaide United at just 15.

Not long after this, all of Europe were circling, and he joined FC Bayern ahead of a list of suitors.

His progression at the club was not linear, and Bayern may have expected him to be further along in his developmental journey than he ended up being.

He featured mostly for the second team before going on loan to Grasshopper in the Swiss Super League Last season.

Total Football Analysis‘ Nestory Irankunda pizza chart below shows how his game compares to that of other players in his position across leagues ranked at a similar level to the Swiss top flight.

Nestory Irankunda Style Of Play

Nestory Irankunda Speed & Physicality

Nestory Irankunda is a physical phenomenon.

He possesses extreme agility and speed over distance, and relentlessly uses this to his advantage.

He has reached speeds of over 37 KM/H when playing in Australia.

If space appears in front of Irankunda, very few defenders in the world can keep up, and this allows him to be very effective not only running with the ball but also making runs behind opposition defences.

One player that he moves and runs similarly to is the new Liverpool signing, Jeremie Frimpong.

Whilst their technique may differ, both have the unique ability to burst away but then maintain that speed over a prolonged period.

In addition, he combines his speed with strength and muscle, meaning he can more than handle himself in close, physical duels.

If defenders try to shrug him off, they often fall away themselves, as shown below.

These magnificent physical features have allowed him to amass nearly 100 senior appearances at such a young age.

Nestory Irankunda Dribbling

Unsurprisingly, this combination of speed and physicality allows Irankunda to be a very effective ball carrier.

In his last season in Australia, Irankunda ranked fourth in the league for successful dribbles per 90.

He also had a 51.7% success rate.

He is not the most technical footballer in close zones, and does not dribble in the way of a Bernardo Silva or Lionel Messi.

Instead, he uses intelligent timing and rapid speed to use space on the pitch to process play.

We have already mentioned Jeremie Frimpong, and he is very much in the mould of the likes of him and Adama Traore at Fulham, who use their acceleration and strength to carry and generate attacks.

Because of his ability to quickly change directions, defenders often second-guess themselves and hesitate out of fear of overcommitting.

This often buys him time on the ball, giving his teammates more lag time to arrive alongside him.

Nestory Irankunda Ball-Striking

The element of his game that originally drew so much worldwide attention to Irankunda was his clean and powerful ball-striking.

He has a top-level ability to hit the ball pure, generating vast amounts of force whilst retaining accuracy.

Because of this, he has a goal catalogue that would rival most forwards’ career highlights at just 19.

He can also boast of already having 21 senior goals in competitive matches.

In-game, he often looks to push the ball before him when dribbling, allowing one step into the strike before unleashing his shot through his laces.

He also has the technical skills to finish first time, and has scored numerous goals by allowing the ball to run across his body before powering a finish past the goalkeeper.

He still requires work on his finesse finishing, and an overeagerness to power his finishes can sometimes be a weakness.

This is partially why his initial goalscoring potential has not developed further.

However, under the right coach, he has all of the skills needed to become a much more prolific forward in the future.

Nestory Irankunda Creativity Vs Low Blocks

Nestory Irankunda’s many strengths make him a huge threat in the final third, as we have heavily discussed.

However, the majority of these strengths are suited to playing against open, high-line defences.

He is an exceptional transition player, but his traits limit his effectiveness and versatility.

This may develop over time; however, some players are naturally system-biased in their play styles.

For example, Adama Traore has not succeeded at a top-level club, and this is down to his reliance on playing in transitional sides.

The top teams face regular low blocks, and Traore, like Irankunda currently, lacks the technical skills to break them down.

If Irankunda wants to progress to play for a top-level team, this side of his game will have to improve, and he will need to get used to making an impact in tight zones with compact opposition.

Nestory Irankunda Consistency At Senior Level

At just 19 years of age, inconsistency is also still a weakness in Irankunda’s game.

He still shows immaturity in many games.

This is sometimes evident in his decision-making, as he can try to execute the spectacular when the easy option is available.

It is also sometimes due to temperament.

When things are going against him and the team, he can often look to lose confidence and focus, meaning he goes through periods without impact.

This is expected of such a young player and should not be criticised heavily.

Nevertheless, consistency is demanded in the top leagues, and drifting for large periods in England will not be tolerated.

It will be essential that Irankunda develops his confidence and consistent focus to maximise his potential and succeed next year at Watford.

Nestory Irankunda Championship Suitability 2025/2026

In the 2024/2025 season, Josh Murphy, Tom Fellows, and Daniel James all ranked in the top 10 for goals and assists.

These are all wingers who like to be direct, running at the opposition before taking one touch on the outside and firing in a cross or a shot.

This gives confidence that Nestory Irankunda could thrive next season, as this part of his game is special.

He most certainly has the physical traits to cope with the English style of play and will not be bullied off the ball if he is set on battling.

The two main determinants of his success are:

  • Watford’s playing style under Paulo Pezzolano
  • Irankunda’s mentality over the season

Firstly, for Irankunda to succeed, Pezzolano must allow him to.

On paper, the pair could be a brilliant fit.

Pezzolano favours verticality and progression over possession dominance, and loves structured pressing and transitional football.

This style could suit Irankunda, who will be given the freedom to run at defenders and take risks.

Secondly, Irankunda will have to be mentally strong to cope with the Championship.

So far, his only consistent playing time has come in Switzerland and Australia.

The Championship will prove to be a step-up in quality in both of these.

To succeed, he will have to believe he has the ability to be there and show perseverance through the tough games they will undoubtedly face.

It is a league often decided by small moments, and if he realises he can decide these moments, he could be a genuine threat to the division.

Conclusion

Nestory Irankunda could prove to be an extremely good signing for Watford.

He is raw and still needs a lot of development, but there is no question at all about his ability or future potential.

He will bring speed, ferocity, and dynamism to Watford’s attack and has the capabilities to score goals and assist if the system allows.

At €3m, this summer deal’s risk-reward ratio is very promising.
